Ma'anar ƙamus na kalmar "Gipsy" (wanda kuma aka rubuta "gypsy") memba ne na mutanen makiyaya da suka samo asali daga arewacin Indiya kuma yanzu suna rayuwa a duniya, musamman a Turai, Arewacin Afirka, da Arewacin Amirka. Kalmar kuma tana iya komawa ga yaren (Romani) da mutanen Gipsy ke magana ko kuma ga mutumin da ke rayuwa marar kyau. Duk da haka, yana da kyau a lura cewa kalmar "Gipsy" wasu suna ɗaukarsa a matsayin wulakanci, kuma "Romani" sau da yawa ana fifita shi a matsayin kalma mafi girma.
