અહંકાર શબ્દનો શબ્દકોશનો અર્થ એ છે કે સ્વ-કેન્દ્રિત, આત્મ-શોષિત અથવા સ્વાર્થી બનવાની વૃત્તિ, ઘણીવાર અન્યના હિત અને સુખાકારીને બાકાત રાખવાની. અહંકાર એ નૈતિક ફિલસૂફીનો પણ ઉલ્લેખ કરી શકે છે જે વ્યક્તિગત સ્વને મૂલ્ય અને નૈતિકતાના અંતિમ સ્ત્રોત તરીકે મૂકે છે અને અન્યના હિત કરતાં પોતાના સ્વ-હિતને પ્રાથમિકતા આપે છે.
